Nem bárbaros e nem helenos: os macedônios do sec. IV a.C. como terceira categoria em Plutarco

Abstract

The text deals with the categorization of the Macedonians in the 4th century BC, using as main source the biography of Alexander the Great, as it was written by Plutarch. Alexander himself has been keen on giving to Hellenes – and, partly, also to Barbarians – the possibility to identify themselves, to a certain degree, with himself and to identify himself with them. In the context of the identification of the Hellenes as Hellenes and of the Macedonians as Macedonians the treatise will analyze the importance of language, religion, culture, ethnicity, geographic region and history and mythology, with the intent to highlight the traits which are common and those which are different for Hellenes at one hand and for Macedonians at the other. Macedonians, as well as Hellenes, tended to despise those who were considered Barbarians by the Hellenes. The obtained results show that it is necessary to operate within the academic discourse of Ancient History and Literature with a third category, to which various Ancient peoples belong, which, so far, by some modern scholars were wrongly included in the category "Hellenes" or in the category "Barbarians", whereas they were considered by the Hellenes themselves neither as Barbarians nor as Hellenes.

O texto estuda a categorização dos macedônios no século IV a.C. tendo como fonte principal a biografia de Alexandre Magno escrita por Plutarco. O próprio Alexandre se esforçou para dar aos helenos – e, em parte, também aos bárbaros – a possibilidade de se identificarem, até certo grau, consigo próprio e de identificar a si próprio com eles. No contexto da identificação dos helenos enquanto helenos e dos macedônios enquanto macedônios, analisa-se a importância da língua, da religião, da cultura, da etnicidade, da região geográfica e da história e mitologia, com a intenção de destacar traços comuns e traços distintos entre helenos e macedônios. Embora os macedônios não estivessem presentes na mitologia helênica, a casa real macedônica aproximava-se constantemente dessa mitologia. Os macedônios, assim como os helenos, tinham a tendência de menosprezar aqueles que eram considerados bárbaros pelos helenos. Como resultado, é preciso operar, no discurso acadêmico da História e Literatura Antiga, com uma terceira categoria à qual pertencem vários povos que até então eram incluídos, erroneamente, por uma parte dos pesquisadores modernos, na categoria “helenos”, e por outra parte, na categoria “bárbaros”, tendo sido esses considerados, na verdade, pelos próprios helenos nem bárbaros e nem helenos.
