Si reparata dici potest libertate deposita: Augusto e a decadência de Roma na História Augusta

Abstract

It is a well-known fact that the anonymous author of the Historia Augusta, a late fourth-century collection of imperial biographies, did not compose a biography about the first Roman princeps, Augustus. Despite of that, the surviving textual tradition, beginning with Hadrian and ending with Carus and his sons, contains several passages on Augustus, especially those concerning some canonical lists of “good emperors”, the imperial succession and the relationship between emperors and the Roman Senate. In my view, the Historia Augusta presents Augustus and his principate as a summary of the shortcomings the narrative links to the course of imperial history, an approach related to something Mathias Haake (2015) describes as an “antimonarchic pattern” that distinguishes the historical perspective formulated by the unknown author.

É bem conhecido o fato de que o anônimo autor da História Augusta, conjunto de biografias imperiais datada do final do século IV, não elaborou uma biografia acerca do primeiro princeps romano, Augusto. A despeito disso, a tradição manuscrita supérstite, que se inicia com Adriano e se encerra com Caro e seus filhos, contém várias passagens relativas a Augusto, em especial aqueles que concernem às listas canônicas de “bons imperadores”, à sucessão imperial e às relações entre imperadores e o Senado romano. Em meu entender, a História Augusta apresenta Augusto e seu principado como uma síntese das imperfeições que a narrativa vincula à história imperial como um todo, em meio aquilo que Mathias Haake (2015) define como “padrão antimonárquico” que singulariza a perspectiva histórica defendida pelo ignoto autor.
