“Queres tu um bom remédio?”: enfermidades, crenças e milagres em um modelo de vida religiosa feminina narrado pelo padre João Franco, Portugal, século XVIII

Abstract

O artigo analisa a obra Vida portentosa da serva de Deus D. Thomazia de Jesus, escrita pelo frade dominicano João Franco e publicada em Lisboa, em 1757, com o propósito de identificar e analisar os discursos produzidos acerca das enfermidades que se abatiam sobre mulheres conventuais e das práticas tradicionais e milagrosas de cura empregadas no Convento do Salvador, em Lisboa. O texto dialoga tanto com a historiografia dedicada ao estudo de biografias de mulheres devotas, quanto com aquela voltada ao estudo da saúde e da medicina, para fundamentar a discussão dos registros que o religioso fez das doenças que essa mulher experimentou ou observou no período em que viveu neste convento lisboeta, na primeira metade do século XVIII, bem como as práticas de cura por ela adotadas ou recomendadas pelo confessor. A análise realizada contribui para a compreensão não apenas da relação existente entre religiosidade e conhecimentos médicos no Setecentos, mas, também, dos significados atribuídos às doenças e às curas pelas mulheres enfermas enclausuradas e por seus confessores.

The article examines the work Vida portentosa da serva de Deus D. Thomazia de Jesus, written by Dominican friar João Franco and published in Lisbon, in 1757, with the purpose of identifying and analyzing the discourse produced about the infirmities that afflicted conventual women and about the traditional and miraculous healing practices employed in the Convento do Salvador, in Lisbon. The text establishes a dialogue with the historiography dedicated to the study of the biographies of devout women, as well as with the one focused on the study of health and medicine, in order to found the discussion of the records the religious man made of the illnesses this woman experienced or observed in the period she lived in this convent in Lisbon, in the first half of the 18th century, as well as the healing practices adopted by her or recommended by the confessor. The analysis conducted contributes to the understanding of not only the relationship existing between religiousness and medical knowledge in the 18th century, but also of the meanings attributed to the illnesses and the cures by the sick cloistered women and by their confessors.
