The philosophy of history is so closely intertwined with the central concepts of modern politics that the campaign of discredit by the conceptual historians (Koselleck and Marquard, for example) against this young discipline, forged in the transition between the 18th and the 19th centuries, has been based on pointing out the ideological pathologies that it has caused (its totalitarian pretensions, or the optimist and, ultimately, terrorist interpretation of world history). The appeal to the classics can contribute to clarify the problems that harass it nowadays, and also to somehow correct the distorted and even parodic image that in general the conceptual historians presented of the philosophy of history. Fichte’s version is overwritten on the palimpsest of Kant’s, who masterfully lays out the trending issues (ontological, epistemological and narrative) in the philosophy of history, and inserts itself in the double effort, prototypical of classical German philosophy, to understand the historical world as a product of freedom, irreductible to nature’s causality and to the constant regularity prevailing in the physical world, and to ease the way for a historiography established on new bases in order to free itself of a disconsolate view of history at the mercy of blind hazard. The amphibious character is a constant in the philosophy of history (as also happens in the case of its twin soul, politics), astride between the Wissenschaftslehre and the historical experience. Thanks to that character, it formulates a critical diagnosis of the past and the present and a prognosis concerning a future culture full of reason and freedom.eng
