Imaginário instituído, imaginário instituinte e identidade: aspetos da transição cultural na Eneida de Virgílio

Abstract

Partindo do pressuposto de que a Eneida é uma obra que evoca um momento histórico no qual ocorreu um processo de transição cultural, este artigo analisa a forma como Virgílio define os imaginários instituído e instituinte da sociedade romana nos livros VI e VIII e o modo como o poeta integra o imaginário da nova ordem político-cultural no plano do processo histórico. Assim, analisa-se a cosmovisão que Virgílio cria no livro VI da Eneida entre os imaginários instituído e instituinte, argumentando-se que a organização da matéria histórica forma um universo valorativamente ininterrupto e uma visão unificada da História, uma vez que o projeto augustano, longe de se alavancar em uma resposta crítica ao simbolismo institucional, surge como recriação do edifício simbólico anterior. A análise das guerras itálicas (livro VIII) dá continuidade à expressão do imaginário da Pax Romana e oferece novos elementos para a conceptualização do Outro na Eneida. A missão que Anquises atribui ao império (6. 851-853) ganha uma amplificação qualitativa, com a integração etrusca na coligação: os contornos dessa integração, que implicam o reconhecimento de que nos povos nativos se encontram aspirações à justiça, redefine o conceito de Outro, dotando consequentemente o papel de Eneias nas guerras de um valor axiológico. Por fim, discute-se se a morte de Turno oblitera a construção do imaginário da Pax desenhado nos livros VI e VIII, argumentando-se que a decisão de Eneias, mais do que pôr em causa essa construção, expressa as tensões que tipicamente ocorrem em momentos de fronteira, marcados pela oscilação entre o compromisso com o passado histórico da sociedade instituída e a adesão ao projeto da uma sociedade que se pretende instituir.

Starting from the assumption that the Aeneid is a work that evokes a historical moment in which a process of cultural transition took place, this article analyzes the way Virgil defines the instituted and instituting imaginaries of Roman society (in books VI and VIII), in order to understand how the poet defines the imaginary of the new political and cultural order in the historical process. Thus, we analyze the worldview of these imaginaries in book VI, arguing that the organization of the historical matter forms an uninterrupted universe and conveys a unified view of History, in which the Augustan project, far from being leveraged in a critical response to institutional symbolism, appears as a re-creation of the previous symbolic edifice. The analysis of the Italic wars (Book VIII) gives continuity to the expression of the imaginary of the Pax Romana and offers new elements for the conceptualization of the Other in the Aeneid. The mission given to the Empire (6. 851-853) by Anchises obtains a qualitative amplification with the Etruscan integration in the coalition since this integration implies the recognition that the native peoples also have aspirations to justice, redefining the concept of Other and endowing the role of Aeneas in these wars with an axiological value. Finally, it is discussed whether Turnus’ death obliterates the construction of the imaginary of the Pax defined in books VI and VIII, arguing that Aeneas’ decision, rather than questioning this construction, expresses the tensions that typically occur in moments of frontier, marked by the oscillation between the commitment to the historical past of the established society and the adhesion to the project of a society that is intended to be instituted.
