A perspetiva polemológica quinhentista da arenga militar

Abstract

Na Antiguidade, os grandes generais viram na exortação das tropas um poderoso aliado contra o inimigo, como o comprovam os tratados militares de Onassandro ou Vegécio. Pelas suas qualidades impressivas, os historiógrafos greco-romanos inseriram a arenga militar nos seus relatos, reelaborando-a retoricamente, num tempo em que a historiografia se aproximou da retórica. Em pleno século do Renascimento, tempo marcado pela pirobalística e pela crescente profissionalização dos exércitos, os tratados militares coevos continuam a propor aos comandos militares o recurso à exortação e à motivação das tropas. Se assinalar este facto já seria importante, a verdade é que a perspetiva polemológica militar quinhentista da arenga militar surge enriquecida com os contextos de pronunciação e os topoi retóricos consagrados pela tradição literária clássica. Assim, neste artigo e de forma transversal, identificamos os tópicos retóricos que os tratados militares escritos por Maquiavel, Fernando Oliveira e Scarion de Pavia prescrevem aos generais antes ou durante uma batalha, inserindo-os na respetiva filiação retórico-historiográfica. Procuraremos demonstrar que a arenga militar, nestes tratados, estará, nos tópicos e nos contextos de pronunciação, mais comprometida com a historiografia clássica do que com a coeva tratadística antiga. Originária do meio castrense, reelaborada retoricamente no silêncio do gabinete do historiógrafo, regressa, no século XVI, ao seu ambiente original, enriquecida e adaptada a diferentes contextos bélicos. É um estudo inédito da importância que a arte militar do século XVI conferia ainda à pronunciação de uma arenga militar, como forma de galvanização dos soldados para a guerra.

In Antiquity, the great generals saw in the exhortation of the troops a powerful ally against the enemy, as evidenced by the military treaties of Onasander or Vegecy. Because of their impressive qualities, Greek-Roman historiographers inserted military harangue into their accounts, rhetorically reworking it, at a time when historiography approached rhetoric. In the midst of the Renaissance, a time marked by pyrobalism and the increasing professionalization of armies, military treaties continue to propose military commands to appeal to the exhortation and motivation of troops. If we point out this fact would be important, the truth is that the military polemological perspective of military harangue comes enriched with the contexts of pronunciation and the rhetoric topoi enshrined in the classical literary tradition. Thus, in this article and in a transversal way, we identify the rhetorical topics that the military treaties written by Machiavelli, Fernando Oliveira and Scarion de Pavia prescribe to the generals before or during a battle, inserting them in their rhetoricalhistoriographic affiliation. We will try to demonstrate that the military harangue in these treatises will be more committed to classical historiography than to the old treatise, in the topics and contexts of pronunciation. Originally from the military milieu, re-elaborated rhetorically in the silence of the historiographer’s office, it returns in the sixteenth century to its original environment, enriched and adapted to different war contexts. It is, in short, an unpublished study of the importance that military art of the sixteenth century still conferred on the pronunciation of a military harangue, as a way of galvanizing soldiers into war.
