Quando foi criada a Inquisição de Lisboa?: explorando hipóteses

Abstract

Afirmam as memórias setecentistas que “a Inquisição de Lixboa foi erecta pelo Serenissimo Cardeal Infante D. Henrique em julho de 1539”. Sem se ignorar uma anterior atividade inquisitorial naquela cidade, documentada desde meados de 1537, muitos estudos acabam por reiterar tal afirmação sem, no entanto, questioná-la. Este estudo propõe-se, finalmente, a fazê-lo! Através de uma leitura integral e extensiva dos documentos produzidos durante os primeiros anos de vida do tribunal, procurarse- ão indícios que permitam formular teses sobre a data de criação deste tribunal, mostrando, em última análise, como estas se antagonizam e que fragilidades residem na sua fundamentação. Procurar-se-á ainda, numa perspetiva comparada, saber como esta questão foi colocada pelos estudos que se debruçaram sobre os restantes tribunais inquisitoriais portugueses e sobre os seus congéneres espanhóis.

Some seventeenth-century documents from the Portuguese Inquisition claim that the Lisbon Inquisition was founded by Cardinal Henry in July 1539. Without ignoring an earlier inquisitorial activity of this court, documented since mid-1537, many studies reaffirm such a statement without, however, questioning it. This study proposes, finally, to do it! Through a comprehensive and extensive reading of the documents produced during the first years of the court’s life, we will look for clues that allow us to formulate theses on a possible foundation, showing how these are contradicted and which weaknesses lie in their arguments. In a comparative perspective, it will be examined how this problem was approached by the studies on the other Portuguese and Spanish inquisitorial courts.
