dc.description.abstract | This paper analyzes the social logic of archival preservation by studying the evolution of the main archival practices developed by noble families in Portugal between the fifteenth and the nineteenth centuries. This analysis is divided into two parts: in general terms, the first part focuses on the meanings and functions assigned to the archives by families, highlighting in particular the problems that must be taken into account so as to avoid fragmented and incomplete interpretations of the social role of archives and archival preservation; the second part examines some of the main archival practices carried out by noble groups, and attempts to clarify the organic relationship between the social evolution of families and the evolution of the archives themselves. | eng |
