Abstract: The author describes how the Portuguese bishop D. Jerónimo Osório was praised in England for his Latin eloquence and the Ciceronian purity of his style by the generation of Roger Ascham, Latin secretary to Queen Elisabeth I, but afterwards criticised not only because the mode of Ciceronianism had passed away but also for religious reasons, namely his controversies with the Anglicans. In the end, the author considers the essay by the English scholar Aubrey F. G. Bell, The Humanist Jeronymo Osorio, in Revue Hispanique in 1928 to be the bestever published on the Portuguese writer.
