Abstract

The author describes a Latin MS. of xvith century drama from Colégio das Artes de Coimbra, now in the Library of the Hispanic Society of America in New York. It is partly similar to MS. 1235 in the Biblioteca Geral da Universidade de Coimbra which the author described in his Catálogo dos Manuscritos da Biblioteca Geral da Universidade de Coimbra, relativos à Antiguidade Clássica (Coimbra, 1945). The present MS. was copied by the Jesuit professors of the Colégio das Artes for the Papal legate Prospero de Santa Croce when he visited Coimbra in the summer of 1561 on his way to the French court to which he had just been appointed Papal nuncio. The author points out differences between the contents of both MSS. and stresses the importance of the knowledge of the Latin theatre of the Renaissance for a better understanding of the dramatic works written in the modern languages during the same period.
