Contrary to Carolina Michaelis’ widely accepted opinion that Gil Vicente, the famous XVIth century Portuguese playwright, only knew a little Church Latin, the author suggests that he may have been more conversant with the learned language than hitherto admitted. Before the end of the XVth century, Latin was well-known and used in the Royal Palace, where Gil Vicente was a frequent visitor. Accordingly, the source of his knowledge of Moschus’5,Ερως Αραπέτης in his Frágua d’Amor, was probably Pontano’s (rather than Poliziano’s) Latin version and not a Spanish or Portuguese translation yet to be found. Previous research on this subject is duly listed.eng
