Abstract: Father Freire divided his study of the Portuguese humanist Diogo Mendes de Vasconcelos (1523-1599) into three parts, of which the first deals with Vasconcelos classical education (acquired in such places as Bordeaux, Toulouse, Coimbra, Orléans and Paris) and literary achievements. He was the friend of prominent men of letters of his country and abroad; as a theologian, he was present at the second session of the Tridentine Council; and published several historical works: Vida de Gonçalo Pinheiro, Vida de André de Resende, Autobiografia, Do Município Eborense. The last one was printed as a sequence (the fifth book) to André de Resende’s De Antiquitatibus Lusitaniae which Mendes de Vasconcelos revised and saw through the press. The second part of Father Freire’s essay includes both the Latin Text and Translation, while the third contains an extensive Commentary on the poetical pieces of Vasconcelos, printed here.
