Cáriton: Quéreas e Calírroe

Abstract

The novel of Chariton, Chaereas and Kallirroe, belongs to the ‘love novel’, a model of great success in Greek hellenistic literature. Although its date has been largely discussed, there is some consensus about the possibility that Chariton’s is the oldest text preserved of this genre. As the novel texts in general it is marked by an elegant style and the reception of a long literary and cultural tradition. At the same time, the author uses a kind of historical patine, produced by the reference to well known events and figures.

O romance de Cáriton, Quéreas e Calírroe, pertence ao género ‘romance de amor’, um modelo com grande difusão na literatura grega da época helenística. Apesar de todas as dificuldades de datação, há algum consenso sobre a ideia de que se trata do mais antigo dos textos conservados do mesmo género. Além da sobriedade de estilo e da importância de um texto que repercute toda uma tradição literária anterior, o romance de Cáriton tem, como sua particularidade, uma falsa patine histórica, que resulta da menção de alguns acontecimentos e personagens paradigmáticos.
