O peixe para os judeus e para os cristãos: leituras de um símbolo à luz da cultura greco-romana

Abstract

O peixe e as espécies marinhas encontram-se, no mundo judaico e cristão, num contexto problemático: se, por um lado, não surgem identificados nos textos bíblicos segundo os traços particularizadores de cada espécie, são alvo de uma utilização simbólica que os eleva à categoria de um dos signos mais expressivos da religiosidade judaico-cristã. Procura-se discutir, neste artigo, partindo da análise do valor que o peixe apresentava na cultura greco-romana, as razões para este apagamento dos traços concretos dos seres marinhos em detrimento da sua valorização como símbolo religioso.

Fish and sea creatures in general may be considered a problematic subject for Judeo-Christianity. In the Bible, they are not identified by the particular characteristics of each species, but, at the same time, they support one of the most expressive, abundant and complex signs of the Judaeo-Christian religiosity. It’s the aim of this paper to discuss the reasons for the silence that surrounds the particular material traces of sea creatures in biblical texts, in spite of their relevance as a religious symbol, and to compare this specific reality with the status of fish in the Greek and Roman pagan world contemporary with the spread of Christianity.
