A relação entre phýsis e mŷthos no Livro III da República de Platão

Abstract

The present work examines the function of myth in the treatment Plato gives to the so called conflict between nómos and phýsis. The analysis is centered in the last segment of the third Book of the Republic, more precisely in the passage named ‘myth of the metals’, lines 414b – 417b. The myth is told by Socrates in attention to the necessity of rendering an account to the natural difference between men. The major argument to be handed here deals with the exceptional change in the course of the narration of the dialogue allowing Socrates to take total control over it as the narrator of the myth. The thesis defended here is that in this passage a variation concerning lógos and léxis is operated and this is fundamental not only in order to maintain the pólis lógoi under construction in the dialogue attached to the phýsis, but as well to consolidate philosophy as a literary genre.

O presente trabalho examina a função do mito no tratamento dispensado por Platão ao chamado conflito entre nómos e phýsis. A análise se centra no último segmento do Livro III da República, mais precisamente na passagem intitulada ‘mito dos metais’, linhas 414b – 417a. O mito é narrado por Sócrates com a intenção de dar um fundamento à noção de que os homens são naturalmente diferentes. O principal argumento a ser desenvolvido diz respeito a uma mudança excepcional no curso da narrativa do diálogo, permitindo a Sócrates passar ao completo comando sobre ela como narrador de um mito. A tese defendida aqui é a de que esta variação concernente ao lógos e à léxis é fundamental não somente para manter a pólis em construção no diálogo no âmbito da phýsis mas igualmente consolidar a filosofia como gênero do lógos.
