Ciência e fantasia na cultura portuguesa do primeiro renascimento

Abstract

Much of the focus of this paper, therefore, is to analyze the influence of coexisting approaches to reality– scientific data, parascientific and imaginative elements – in the Late Middle Ages. Auctoritates such as Pseudo-Aristotle, Pliny and Albert the Great but also mystical and medieval hagiographical texts have shaped a scientific representation of the world that the Maritime Discoveries and the experientialism would call into question ad re-evaluate. Thus, a mental reconfiguration leads both to the lexicon’s scientifization and renewal definition of reality.

Este artigo procura refletir sobre a coexistência de dois modos de conhecimento e de aproximação ao real na Baixa Idade Média – um de pendor racionalizante e científico e outro marcado ainda pela espiritualidade e pelos relatos fantásticos. Veremos, por isso, que Pseudo-Aristóteles, Plínio e Alberto Magno contribuem a par com os textos místicos e hagiográficos para uma determinada representação do mundo que as descobertas marítimas e o experiencialismo questionam e reveem. Assim, a reconfiguração mental repercutir-se-á inevitavelmente na cientifização do léxico e numa nova definição do real.
