Without pretending to identify, analyse and evaluate the multiple conceptions of democracy, nor the challenge that it faces in the contemporary world, this text focuses upon two concrete dimensions: the human condition and democracy, as well the requirements that they place upon each other. Throughout the five moments in which it is organized, including an introduction and a conclusion, it seeks to explore, comparing them and confronting them, the ancient and modern conceptions of the human condition, of politics and, therefore, of democracy itself. This exercise is developed with the objective of revisiting the representative, participative and territorial dimensions of democracy. To that effect, attention is centered upon the phenomena of regionalism and autonomy and the roles they end up fulfilling in the framework of participative democracy, taking recourse to the Portuguese experience of insular regional autonomy in the Azores and in Madeira adopted in the context of the democratization of the country made possible by its April 1974 revolution.eng
