"Missão histórica" e o "papel dos intelectuais" na filosofia da cultura de Bento de Jesus Caraça: do momento da consciência à consciência do momento

Abstract

Na trajectória da esquerda intelectual nas primeiras décadas do século XX, ao ideal seareiro de um intelectual-apóstolo, teórico e especulativo, que foi resposta à "crise da cidade" republicana, a filosofia da cultura de Bento Caraça operou uma nova e decisiva ruptura com o paradigma romântico-liberal do século XIX, estabelecendo uma distinção entre o trabalho intelectual, a função social dos intelectuais e o que designou por papel dos intelectuais no quadro radical de uma "missão histórica" emancipadora: cumprindo aos intelectuais, em todos os tempos, desenvolver um trabalho mais ou menos especializado nos domínios do conhecimento para o progresso da civilização, e devendo pela sua função social sistematizar e aplicar esse conhecimento no alargamento gregário da cultura, o "papel dos intelectuais" correspondia, na consciência do momento de crise e transformação dos anos trinta, a uma adesão à tonalidade geral da história e do devir que cria próximo.

Somewhere between the left-wing intellectuals in the early twentieth century and the ideal of the "harvester", an intellectual-apostle, theoretical and speculative, which was the response to the republican "city crisis", the philosophy of culture of Bento Caraça created a new and decisive cut with the 20th-century romantic-liberal paradigm, and separated intellectual work, the social function of intellectuals, from what he called the intellectuals' role within the radical framework of an emancipating "historical mission": the intellectuals were, at all times, responsible for performing a rather specialised job in knowledge for the progress of civilisation. Due to their social function, they should organise and apply such knowledge in the dissemination of culture; the "role of intellectuals", in the moment of crisis and change which marked the thirties, was to stick to the general tone of history and of the times to come.
