O outro civilizacional: o Japão do século XVI visto pelos olhos de um jesuíta português

Abstract

No século XVI, a Europa começou a conhecer um Japão, longínquo e exótico, através da epistolografia jesuíta, sobretudo da autoria de Luís Fróis, que levou para este território a cultura de uma nova Europa, a Europa do Renascimento e da Reforma Católica, possibilitando um intercâmbio cultural de dimensões extraordinárias. Foi através dos olhos dos jesuítas que a Europa se rendeu às potencialidades de um território que nascia agora para a modernidade e que acolheu afavelmente o estrangeiro, portador de uma outra cultura e de um outro pensamento, esbatendo-se fronteiras sobretudo mentais. As diversas realidades nipónicas foram destacadas por Fróis numa grandiosa edição da correspondência enviada para a Europa durante a segunda metade do século XVI, intitulada Cartas de Évora. O olhar de Fróis sobre o Outro civilizacional é o olhar de um europeu, de um religioso, mas sobretudo de um homem que vê, descreve e interpreta, sempre condicionado, um Outro homem.

In the sixteenth century, Europe began to know Japan, far away and exotic, through the Jesuit epistolography, particularly by Luís Fróis, who takes to this territory the culture of a new Europe, the Europe of the Renaissance and the Catholic Reformation, making possible a cultural exchange of extraordinary dimensions. It is through the eyes of the Jesuits that Europe surrenders to the potentialities of a territory which is now born for modernity and which warmly welcomes the foreigner, who carries a different culture and a different thought, by blurring the predominantly mental boundaries. The various Japanese realities are highlighted by Fróis in a great edition of the correspondence sent to Europe during the second half of the sixteenth century, called Cartas de Évora. Fróis eyes on the civilizational Otherness are the eyes of an European, a religious, but above all a man who sees, describes and interprets, always conditioned, another man.
