Inquisição, jesuítas e cristãos-novos em Portugal no século XVI

Abstract

Escrito a partir de pesquisas arquivísticas conduzidas em Roma e em Portugal, o presente artigo afronta o tema das controversas relações entre a Companhia de Jesus e a Inquisição portuguesa durante o século XVI. Tratou-se de um convívio nada linear, até porque se entrecruzou, logo desde os primórdios, com a delicada questão assumida pelos padres jesuítas em relação às principais vítimas do Santo Ofício: os cristãos- -novos. Daí resultou uma história feita de colaborações e alianças inesperadas, mas também de conflitos declarados e até violentos que são um evidente reflexo das tendências e tensões existentes na Igreja e na sociedade portuguesa quinhentista.

Written from material gathered from archive research done both in Portugal and in Rome, this essay deals with the controversial relationship between the Company of Jesus and the Portuguese Inquisition during the XVI century. It was a rather complex relationship, difficult from the beginning because of the position taken by the Jesuits on the issue of the New Christians, the main victims of the Holy Office. It is a history made of surprising collaborations and alliances but also made of open and even violent conflicts, an apparent reflection of the tensions and the different tendencies present within the Portuguese Church and society.
