Para uma nova interpretação da realidade metrológica tardo-medieval: geografia, política e sociedade

Abstract

A metrologia constitui uma das áreas mais complexas e desconhecidas da história medieval portuguesa, sendo que o escasso interesse dos investigadores por estas matérias tem resultado em diversas insuficiências, mormente, nos domínios da história económica. Com este texto procura-se contribuir para uma nova reflexão sobre o impacto da metrologia na vida das populações e de como esta representou uma fonte profusa de problemas e conflitos ao longo dos séculos XIV e XV. Neste sentido, as razões da diversidade geográfica dos pesos e medidas; as reformas régias de uniformização e o seu nível de sucesso no terreno; a utilização política, comercial e fiscal da metrologia e o significado da dimensão dos pesos e medidas são alguns dos principais pontos em análise.

Metrology is one of the most complex and least studied areas of the Portuguese medieval history; the lack of interest of the researchers on these issues has resulted in some lacunae, above all in the fields of economic history. This text seeks to contribute to a new reflection on the impact of metrology on the life of populations, and how it represented a profuse source of problems and conflicts along the 14th and 15th centuries. In this sense, the reasons for geographical diversity of weights and measures, the royal reforms for uniformity and their level of success on the ground, the political, commercial and fiscal use of metrology, and the significance of the dimension of weights and measures are some of the key points examined.
