A vingança dos sonhos ou o reverso de Descartes (A propósito de Tudo é e não é de Manuel Alegre)

Abstract

In this critical study about Manuel Alegre’s novel Everything is and is not, we show how the strategy of the narrative is based on a revival of the logic of the dream that “infecting” reality itself, determines the reappraisal of dreaming in contradiction to the disqualifi cation the Cartesian evidence had operated on him. Thus, the copulative principle of the coincidence of opposites replaces the Aristotelian principle of non-contradiction and what was a dream becomes a principle not only in real life, but also in aesthetics and literary creation so that the writing looks like a metaphor of dreaming and the reality turns like a metaphor of the dream and writing. Hence, Everything is and is not, being a novel about the mystery of dreams, is also a novel about the human being, because we “are also the mystery the dreams are made of.”

Neste estudo crítico sobre o romance de Manuel Alegre Tudo é e não é procuramos demonstrar como a estratégia narrativa assenta numa recuperação da lógica do sonho que, acabando por “contaminar” a própria realidade, determina a revalorização do sonho contra a desqualifi cação que a evidência cartesiana havia operado sobre ele. O princípio copulativo da coincidência dos opostos substitui-se assim ao princípio aristotélico da não-contradição e, de princípio do sonho, transforma-se em princípio não só da vida real, mas também da estética e da criação literária, de tal maneira que a escrita aparece como metáfora do sonho e a realidade como metáfora do sonho e da escrita. Assim, Tudo é e não é, sendo um romance sobre o mistério dos sonhos, é também um romance sobre o ser humano, pois nós “também somos o mistério que os sonhos são”.
