Será que pode existir um alien lógico?: a leitura austera de Wittgenstein e a natureza das verdades lógicas

Abstract

Procuro neste artigo defender que muito para além de uma opção hermenêutica que alguns wittgensteinianos consideram filosoficamente infrutífera (Hacker 2003), a chamada leitura austera de Wittgenstein, ou New Wittgenstein, de que James Conant (Conant 1991) e Cora Diamond (Diamond 1991) são os principais expoentes, foca questões filosoficamente fundamentais. O meu exemplo é a relação entre a natureza das verdades lógicas e a natureza do método da filosofia. Começo por analisar as razões pelas quais Conant (Conant 1991) escolhe caracterizar as posições tractarianas acerca de lógica e método no contexto de uma disputa histórica entre psicologismo e anti‑psicologismo. Concluo explicando a forma como a figura fregeana do alien lógico (Frege 1893) ilustra as propostas da leitura austera quanto a lógica, método filosófico e a nossa condição enquanto pensadores.

Far from being a mere hermeneutic option, which some wittgensteinians regard as resulting in no more than a sterile debate on types of nonsense (Hacker 2003), the so‑called austere reading of Wittgenstein, the main representatives of which are James Conant (Conant 1991) and Cora Diamond (Diamond 1991), has philosophically fundamental issues at its core. My example here is the relation between the nature of logical truths and the nature of philosophical method. I start by analysing Conant’s (Conant 1991) reasons for presenting Wittgenstein’s Tractarian views of logical truths and of method in the context of a historical clash between psychologism and anti‑psychologism. I end by spelling out the way the fregean figure of a logical alien embodies the proposals of the austere reading regarding logical truths, philosophical method, and our condition as thinkers.
