A evolução da cultura médica: a Revista de Neurologia e Psiquiatria (1888-1889)

Abstract

O autor analisa os quatro números publicados da Revista de Neurologia e Psiquiatria (1888-1889), primeira publicação portuguesa destas especialidades, dirigida por Bettencourt Rodrigues (1854-1933). É passado em revista o conteúdo da publicação, referenciados brevemente os seus autores, assim como o noticiário, críticas ou comentários com importância histórica e científica, que testemunhavam o interesse crescente pelos temas, a tentativa de os divulgar como o da divulgação dos autores estrangeiros mais lidos e discutidos, e por outro lado o esforço de institucionalização da Psiquiatria, apontando-se lacunas e atrasos e pugnando pelo ensino oficial ainda inexistente, por nova legislação e reclamando a atenção dos poderes públicos.

L'auteur analyse les quatre numéros publiés de la Revue de Neurologie et de Psychiatrie (1888-1889), première publication portugaise de ces spécialités médicales, dirigée par Bettencourt Rodrigues (1854-1933). On passe en revue le contenu de la publication, on fait brièvement référence a ses auteurs, ainsi que les nouvelles, critiques ou commentaires ayant une importance historique et scientifique, qui témoignent de l'intérêt croissant porté à ces thèmes, la tentative de les diffuser, ainsi que la promotion des auteurs étrangers les plus lus et discutés, et d'autre part, l'effort d'institutionnalisation de la Psychiatric, en faisant référence aux lacunes et aux retards et en luttant pour l'enseignement officiel encore inexistant, pour une nouvelle législation et en réclamant aussi l' attention des pouvoirs publics.

The author analyses the four editions published of the Magazine of Neurology and Psychiatry (1888-1889), the first Portuguese publication on these specialisations, edited by Bettencourt Rodrigues (1854-1933). A review is made of the publication's content, with a brief description of its authors, as well as its news, criticism and opinions of historical and scientific importance. These reveal the growing interest in the issues, the effort to publicise them and the attempt to disseminate work by the most read and discussed foreign authors on the subject. On the other hand, the magazine demonstrates the efforts made towards institutionalising Psychiatry by identifying gaps and delays in the system, as well as reflecting the struggle to introduce official education and new legislation in the field by attracting the attention of the powers that be.
