The Alcoitão rehabilitation school and the scientific and professional assertion of the physiotherapist in Portugal in the second half of the 20th century

Abstract

Entre finais dos anos 50 e inícios dos anos 60 do século XX, o contexto português, sociocultural e médico, foi propício à construção de um hospital de reabilitação. O mesmo projeto integrava a formação de uma escola — a Escola de Reabilitação de Alcoitão, instituída em 1966 (Portaria 22034, de 4 de Junho) e integrada no Centro de Medicina de Reabilitação de Alcoitão, instituição dependente da Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa. A Escola de Reabilitação do Alcoitão está na origem da actual Escola Superior de Saúde do Alcoitão fundada no ano de 1994 (Portaria nº 185/94, de 31 de Março). Assinale-se que a experiência em Portugal da Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa na formação de profissionais de saúde no domínio da reabilitação remonta a 1957 com a criação dos cursos de Agentes Técnicas de Fisioterapia e de Terapêutica Ocupacional e com o curso de Terapêutica da Fala, em 1962. O objectivo do presente estudo é o de assinalar a acção pioneira da Escola Superior de Saúde do Alcoitão na formação de fisioterapeutas em Portugal, a sua relevância na história do ensino da Fisioterapia em Portugal e na formação de fisioterapeutas. Este artigo apresenta uma fracção de um estudo mais vasto sobre a história da Fisioterapia em Portugal e o processo de profissionalização dos fisioterapeutas portugueses.

Entre la fin des années 50 et le début des années 60 du XXe siècle, le contexte socioculturel et médical portugais était propice à la construction d'un hôpital de médecine physique et de réadaptation. Le même projet comprenait la formation d'une école - l'École de réadaptation fonctionnelle d'Alcoitão, créée en 1966 (arrêté ministériel 22034, du 4 juin 1966), qui était intégrée dans le Centre de médecine physique et de réadaptation d'Alcoitão, une institution dépendant de l'institution de solidarité sociale Santa Casa da Misericordia de Lisboa. L'École de réadaptation d'Alcoitão est à l'origine de l'actuelle École supérieure de la Santé d'Alcoitão (Escola Superior de Saúde do Alcoitão), fondée en 1994 (arrêté ministériel n° 185/94 du 31 mars 1994). Il est à noter que l'expérience de l'institution de solidarité sociale Santa Casa da Misericordia de Lisboa, au Portugal, dans la formation des professionnels de santé, dans le domaine de la réadaptation fonctionnelle, remonte à 1957 avec la création des cours intitulés Agents techniques de physiothérapie et d'ergothérapie et du cours d'orthophonie en 1962. Le but de cette étude est de souligner l'action pionnière de l'École supérieure de la santé d'Alcoitão dans la formation des physiothérapeutes au Portugal, sa pertinence dans l'histoire de l'enseignement de la physiothérapie au Portugal et dans la formation des physiothérapeutes. Cet article est un extrait d'une vaste étude sur l'histoire de la physiothérapie au Portugal et du processus de professionnalisation des physiothérapeutes portugais.

Between the late 1950s and the early 60s, the Portuguese - social and cul - ural and medical - context favoured the construction of a rehabilitation hospital. The same project included the inception of a school — Alcoitão School of Rehabilitation, founded in 1966 (Order no. 22034, of 4 June) and integrated in the Medical Rehabilitation Centre of Alcoitão, which in turn was under the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa. The Alcoitão School of Rehabilitation was the predecessor of the current Alcoitão Superior School of Health founded in 1994 (Order no. 185/94, of 31 March). It should be pointed out that in Portugal the experience of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa in training health professionals in the field of medical rehabilitation dates back to 1957, when the training courses for Physiotherapy Technician and Occupational Therapists were created and the Speech Therapy diploma was founded (in 1962). The purpose of this study is to highlight the Alcoitão Superior School of Health as the forerunner of physiotherapy education in Portugal, the leading part it played in the history of Physiotherapy education in Portugal and the training of physiotherapists. This paper is part of a vaster study of the history of Physiotherapy in Portugal and the professionalisation of Portuguese physiotherapists.
