Considering as a starting point the most innovative aspects of André Gide’s Paludes, which make it one of the gateways to the contemporary novel, namely the theme of a “novel within the novel” and the satirical tone that runs through the work, this article makes comparative considerations and draws parallels with the characters and situations in Virgil’s first eclogue, which serves as the starting point for the novel in progress that the narrator proposes to write.
