Title: | Escolas em Angola durante o Estado Novo: arquitectura e arte | Other Titles: | Schools in Angola during the Estado Novo: architecture and art | Authors: | Milheiro, Ana Vaz | Issue Date: | 2011 | Publisher: | Imprensa da Universidade de Coimbra | Abstract: | O investimento em Angola na criação de uma rede escolar liceal e técnico
In Angola, the investment in the creation of a school network concerning secondary and technical and professional levels was part of a strategy focused on the development of a local elite. The architecture of public promotion in the ultramarine regions, also interpreted as an "institutional art", was believed to contribute to consolidate the spirit of unity between the metropolis and the territories under Portuguese administration at that time. All the functional values prevailed upon aesthetics. Initially, the projects were in the hands of architects recruited in the JCETS. By the end of 1944, it was created in Lisbon the Office for the Colonial Urbanization, in charge of these equipments. With the reform of 1957, the projects started to be executed by provincial departments. This transition strengthen the consolidation of a modern local culture, in opposition to the "conservative" drawing of metropolitan architectures. The presented cases were collected in Luanda, Lobito and Benguela. |
