De como a hidra se fez mestre: o lugar de Ramalho Ortigão

Abstract

A obra de Ramalho Ortigão, uma das figuras menos estudadas do grupo designado por "Vencidos da Vida", foi, com o advento do Integralismo Lusitano de António Sardinha, objecto de leituras tendentes à assimilação daquele autor enquanto mestre da acção integralista. A perspectivação que Ramalho faz da ideia de Portugal enquanto mosaico de lugares em lugar uno permitirá uma abordagem diferente do papel original a que os integralistas o votam. Ao encontrar na obra ramalhiana as fundações de uma certa representação da(s) Pátria(s), será possível diagnosticar o que de determinado os integralistas fizeram frágil - a ponto de subtraírem Ramalho da res publica que ele também sonhou. Cumpre, pois, compreender o seu lugar no cruzamento de representações do século XIX português - não para eleger leituras unívocas mas antes para, no sentido da veiculação da história das ideias, actualizar interpretações.

With the advent of Antonio Sardinha's Lusitan Integralism, the work of Ramalho Ortigão - one of the less-studied authors in the group "Vencidos da Vida" ("Vanquished by Life") - became the object of readings that tended to consider the latter writer as a master of integralist action. Ramalho's conception of Portugal as a mosaic of places in a unified place will allow for an approach that is different from the original role allotted him by the integralists. Having pinpointed the foundations of a certain representation of the Homeland(s) in Ramalho's work, it will be possible to identify how and what it was that the integralists changed from fixed to fickle - to the point of removing Ramalho from the res publica which he also dreamed of. It is, therefore, necessary to understand his place in the intersection of representations from the Portuguese 19th century - not in order to opt for univocal readings, but in order to update interpretations, as befits the conveying of the history of ideas.
