Portugal como "corpo" e como "alma" (sécs. XIX/XX): uma revisitação sintética

Abstract

Visa-se sublinhar a existência de uma transversal tensão entre optimismo e pessimismo nas representações feitas sobre Portugal no interior de um velho debate que, se tinha séculos, atingiu o seu apogeu, nos meios intelectuais, a partir dos inícios do século XIX, e onde aquelas foram ganhando uma crescente autonomia em relação à própria realidade que referenciavam. Mas também se pretende incitar ao exercício de uma atitude metódica que submeta a crítica ao contraditório. Veredicto igualmente intelectual, sem dúvida, mas que, pelo menos, não pretende escamotear este facto: se as imagens de Portugal são multimodas, e se elas testemunham a época de onde emergem, o certo é que elas não escapam, igualmente, aos mitemas de quem as desenha.

This paper aims at highlighting the existence of an overarching tension between optimism and pessimism in the representations of Portugal at the core of a debate which, although centuries old, reached its peak, within intellectual circles, after the early 19th century. In these circles, such representations gained increasing autonomy in relation to the very reality they alluded to. But one also intends to encourage the exercise of a methodical attitude whereby criticism can be gainsaid. Surely an intellectual verdict as well, but one that, at least, does not try to deny the fact that while the images of Portugal are manifold and bear witness to the time wherein they emerged, they cannot avoid the mythemes of the person.
