The assistance given to I World War soldiers provided dozens of diligent women opportunities to intervene in public life thus acquiring a visibility that otherwise they would be deprived of. Their influence did not develop in a peaceful and consensual fashion. Women were a reflection of ideological cleavages that divided portuguese society. The rivalries between the Portuguese Women’s Crusade, the Portuguese Women’s Assistance to War Victims and even the Portuguese Red Cross mirrored the combat against the great purpose: conquering the souls of the Portuguese – for the Catholic Church or for the laic Republic dreamt by the mentors of the portuguese anticlericalism. |
