A comemoração da Grande Guerra em Portugal: 1919-1926

Abstract

Pouco se sabe sobre a forma como em Portugal foi celebrada a participação na Grande Guerra, nos anos que se seguiram ao conflito, e sobre as dificuldades enfrentadas pelos ex-combatentes após o regresso das trincheiras. Porém, uma primeira abordagem destes temas revela a existência de um enorme corpo documental de fácil acesso e de grande importância, capaz de alterar, sugere-se neste artigo, o consenso historiográfico sobre as relações República- -Exército e as origens do golpe de estado de 28 de Maio de 1926.

Little is known about either the way in which Portugal commemorated its participation in the First World War, in the years that followed the conflict, or the difficulties encountered by returning veterans. This initial survey reveals the existence of a readily available, and significant, body of evidence related to these issues which might just alter the reigning consensus on the relationship between the Portuguese First Republic and its army, and therefore on the origins of the 28 may, 1926, coup.
